During a press briefing in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, the Area Controller of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun 1 Area Command, Bamidele Makinde, announced the interception of 6,743 bags of smuggled foreign parboiled rice, each weighing 50kg, which is equivalent to 11 trailer loads.
Additionally, the command seized several items, including petroleum products, second-hand clothing, foreign poultry products, foreign used tyres, and Cannabis Sativa suspected to be Indian hemp, among others.
The Duty Payable Value (DPV) of the seized items amounted to N231,218,506.00, and the command generated a total of N28,445,757 through import duties and auction sales of scrap vehicles and petroleum products between January and February of this year.
Makinde emphasized the command's commitment to facilitating legitimate trade while warning against illicit trades that could negatively affect the economy and damage the reputation of business owners.
He urged smugglers to steer clear of such activities, warning that anyone caught in the act would face the full weight of the law.
